Seeking Truth
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6
We make decisions based on we believe is true. When our child asks if he can go on a school fieldtrip, we don’t call a friend to ask, rather we carefully read the school notice and make a decision based on the facts. Likewise, when our checking account gets mixed up, we call the bank, not our dentist. When we have terrible chest pains, we go to the doctor for the truth, not a store clerk. Yes, we want the truth, but sometimes even these nice people are wrong! Why then, when we’re looking for spiritual truth, do we trust a neighbor, a television star, or a self-help book from the library? Go to the source of spiritual truth—pick up your Bible and listen to God!
Seeking Spiritual Truth?
Truth is defined as that which is in accordance with fact or reality. It is veracity and genuineness. It is how thing actually are. Spiritual truth is defined in terms of God, whose very nature is truth. God is “the God of truth.” (Ps 31:5, Isa 65:16). Jesus Christ is “full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) The Holy Spirit is “the Spirit of truth.” (John 14:17) What are the characteristics of truth?
Truth is authoritative: it speaks with the authority of God, it demands, never merely suggests.
Truth has the power to change our lives, convert our souls, strengthen our faith, renew our minds, revive our hearts and guide our every step. God’s truth is the final word on how we ought to live. It tells us how to follow Christ. God’s truth will be the final judge of our lives and have the final say in our eternity.
Paul tells us in 2 Timothy 2:15 that Scripture is “the word of truth.” Jesus prayed, “Your word is truth.” (John 17:17) We need to read and study God’s word to learn God’s truth—not listen to the words and voices of men.
Additional verses: Psalms 19:10 and 119:89, Romans 3:4, John 8:32, Hebrews 4:12

- Truth is divine: it is from above, not of this world.
- Truth is absolute: it is universal, not swayed by personal or cultural preferences.
- Truth is singular: it is a single entity, a consistent whole, not a collection of gathered ideas.
- Truth is objective: it is precise, impartial, unbiased and non-partisan, not vague or abstract.
- Truth is immutable: it is fixed, the same yesterday, today and forever, not changing and shifting
